DEGRASSI: EXTRA CREDIT

Ellie and MarcoWhat's that? There's a series of graphic novels based on the hit television show Degrassi: The Next Generation? Right on! The only thing better would be if I got to draw one. Oh wait, now that's true too!

Seriously. I'm currently illustrating Degrassi: Extra Credit vol. 4 and I'm quite thrilled to be on this project. Like many Canadians my age, I grew up watching Degrassi Junior High and then Degrassi High. And when I tuned in to Degrassi: The Next Generation a couple years ago, I was hooked again. Great teen drama that most people can actually relate to and which isn't afraid to handle real issues.

These first four graphic novels take place during the summer between seasons 5 and 6 of the television show, expanding on the relationships and issues established on air. The writer for this series is J. Torres, who has written Teen Titans Go!, Love As A Foreign Language, Alison Dare and many other comic books I've enjoyed.

Each volume will showcase the talents of a different artist. The first three books feature the art of Ed Northcott on Vol. 1, Ramon Pérez on Vol. 2, and Eric Kim on Vol. 3. And I'll be tackling Vol. 4 with the help of inker Jeff Wasson. The image to the right is one of our pages. Click it to see it bigger!

Volume 1 is in stores now from Madison Press Books, in conjunction with Fenn Publishing in Canada and Simon & Schuster in the USA. Expect to see mine hit shelves in Spring 2007.
